In HFC system, one node which is one cable line in head end
accommodates the home pass of 1000 to 2000 as you say.
※ HFC: Hyblid Fiber Coaxial

According to demand over their service, operators mix and connect two
or more cables in one CMTS port as your imaging.

 US: up stream
 DS: down stream
                         CMTS line card
   1 node US-----+        +---------+
   2 node US ----+        |         |
   3 node US ----+->---->-+ US port |
   4 node US ----+        |         |
                          |         |
   1 node DS-----+        |         |
   2 node DS ----+-<----<-+ DS port |
   3 node DS ----+        |         |
   4 node DS ----+        +---------+

Some line cards have the port of a different number of DS and US.
If it mixes, a noise level will go up relatively. Since US is more
sensitive than DS to noise in many cases, there are more US than DS.

                         CMTS line card
                          +---------+
   1 node US------->---->-+ US port |
   2 node US ------>---->-+ US port |
   3 node US ------>---->-+ US port |
   4 node US ------>---->-+ US port |
                          |         |
   1 node DS-----+        |         |
   2 node DS ----+-<----<-+ DS port |
   3 node DS ----+        |         |
   4 node DS ----+        +---------+
