[apnic-announce] Important developments in IPv6 reverse DNS

Important developments in IPv6 reverse DNS

  ip6.int - being phased out
  ip6.arpa - the new standard
____________________________________________

Dear Colleagues,

The following operational advice is important for anyone using IPv6
address space.

Standard for reverse DNS delegation in IPv6
-------------------------------------------
IPv6 reverse DNS delegations have previously been made under both
ip6.arpa and ip6.int domains. However, RFC RFC3152 specifies that
ip6.arpa should now be the standard and that ip6.int should be
deprecated (phased out).

APNIC now maintains ip6.arpa reverse DNS delegations for IPv6 address
ranges delegated to Asia Pacific networks.

APNIC will continue to support the use of ip6.int for the time being,
but this support will be phased out in future.

Action required from IPv6 address holders
-----------------------------------------
If you hold IPv6 address space you must now ensure that you maintain
reverse DNS delegations within ip6.arpa.

In addition to your ip6.arpa delegations, you may also choose to
maintain delegations within ip6.int. This is still supported by APNIC,
but is optional.

APNIC procedures and information
--------------------------------
APNIC has created equivalent ip6.arpa reverse domain objects for all
ip6.int reverse domain objects currently in the APNIC Whois Database.

APNIC will set up ip6.arpa services for all future IPv6 allocations.
