Address Supporting Organization (ASO)

About the ASO

For more information on ASO activities, see APNIC's pages on the Address Supporting Organization and associated archived documents or the official Official ASO website.

The Address Supporting Organization (ASO), is one of three Supporting Organizations called for in the ICANN Bylaws. The ASO reviews and develops recommendations on Internet policy relating to the system of IP addresses, and advises the ICANN Board on these matters.

Formation of the ASO

The ICANN Bylaws call for Supporting Organizations to be "formed through community consensus, as reflected in applications or similar proposals to create an initial Supporting Organization." In July 1999, the three existing Regional Internet Registries (APNIC, ARIN, and RIPE NCC) submitted a proposal to form the ASO on the basis of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). ICANN accepted this proposal during its Board meeting in Santiago, Chile on 26 August 1999.

On 24 October, 2003, the RIRs (which by then included LACNIC), entered into an MoU to form the Number Resource Organization (NRO). The purpose of the NRO is to undertake joint activities of the RIRs, including joint technical projects, liaison activities and policy co-ordination. The NRO then negotiated with ICANN, which resulted in a new ASO MoU, signed on 21 October 2004. Under this new MoU, the ASO function is performed by the NRO Number Council.

Address Council elections and appointments

From each RIR region, the AC members include two members selected by the respective regional policy forum and one member appointed by the Board of the RIR.
